Chinese President Xi Jinping will embark on a three-nation Southeast Asia tour next week, marking his first international trip of 2025. The tour—covering Vietnam (April 14–15), Malaysia, and Cambodia (April 15–18)—aims to deepen diplomatic and economic ties with regional allies as U.S.-China trade tensions escalate.
The trip comes as the United States enforces steep tariffs on Chinese goods, with rates reaching 145% under President Donald Trump’s new trade policy. As Beijing faces mounting economic pressure, China is looking to strengthen its strategic partnerships with neighboring nations that have also been impacted by Trump’s tariff regime. Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaysia have seen reciprocal tariffs of 46%, 49%, and 24%, respectively.
Amid growing global trade friction, Xi’s visits signal a renewed focus on personal diplomacy. According to China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency, upcoming features will highlight Beijing’s enduring bonds with Malaysia and Cambodia, referring to ties as “flowing water” and describing Xi’s Cambodian allies as “ironclad friends.”
China is simultaneously advancing talks with regional and global partners. Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao has held video discussions with trade officials from the EU, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa to build a united stance against U.S. protectionism. Premier Li Qiang also recently spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to reaffirm mutual commitment to fair, rules-based trade.
With most U.S. reciprocal tariffs temporarily paused—except those targeting China—Beijing’s outreach to Southeast Asia and beyond represents a strategic pivot in preserving economic alliances and countering isolation as the global trade landscape shifts.
