ATLANTA, Dec. 15, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Genetics Policy Institute (GPI) and Regenerative Medicine Foundation (RMF) brought over a thousand scientists, clinicians, industry leaders, investors, government officials and patient advocates together for a three day conference designed to find cures and end human suffering at the 11th annual World Stem Cell Summit and the second annual RegMed Capital Conference, co-located at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, Georgia.
"For 11 years, the Genetics Policy Institute has gathered leaders from the stem cell and regenerative medicine community to share the latest scientific discoveries, pathways to deliver treatments to patients, and how to accelerate investment in this lifesaving research," said Bernard Siegel, Founder of the World Stem Cell Summit & RegMed Capital Conference and Executive Director of GPI.
Sessions at the 11th annual World Stem Cell Summit covered a range of disease areas and medical conditions including neurological disease, cardiovascular issues, spinal cord injury, cancer, HIV/AIDS, aging and more.
Speakers such as Dr. Robert M. Califf, President Obama's nominee to lead the Food and Drug Administration, discussed the role of regulations and pathways to connect research discoveries and patients in safe and ethical ways.
The impact of microgravity when studying stem cells on the International Space Station was a hot topic at the Summit as the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) led sessions on how space is a platform for innovation that can benefit all humankind.
Participants at the Summit also learned from the international community. With attendees from over 35 countries, sessions led by academic and industry leaders from outside the United States shared models for regulation and collaboration that can accelerate clinical application of regenerative medicine in Japan.
"With the convergence of innovative technologies, medical research is on the brink of breakthrough discoveries to tackle chronic disease," said Siegel. "The World Stem Cell Summit created a forum to accelerate the field by expanding knowledge and providing a platform to forge collaborations and facilitate progress."
