7-Eleven Japan has introduced fresh-fried doughnuts at select locations, but are they as good as the limited-time trial version? Reporter Go Hatori taste-tested two flavors, sharing his thoughts on whether the newly permanent treats are worth trying.
7-Eleven Japan Introduces Fresh-Fried Doughnuts Nationwide, Sparking Curiosity About Their Quality
According to SoraNews24, a new release is set to shake up Japan’s convenience store food scene by introducing freshly fried doughnuts at 7-Eleven.
In Japan, convenience store food is known for its quality, often surpassing what one might find in similar stores overseas. However, there was initial skepticism when 7-Eleven announced it would begin selling doughnuts fried fresh in-store. Despite this, reporter Go Hatori was confident the doughnuts would be a hit, having tasted them in March during a limited-time trial at his local store.
With the doughnuts becoming a permanent item at stores in Saitama, Chiba, and Tokyo starting September 3, Go was not alone in his praise. The big question remains: Are these new doughnuts as good as those from the trial run?
Taste Test: 7-Eleven Japan’s Fresh-Fried Doughnuts Deliver Fluffy Texture and Rich Flavor
Go eagerly visit the nearest 7-Eleven to find out. Upon arriving at the counter, he noticed three varieties available: Maple (140 yen), Chocolate (160 yen), and Custard (160 yen). Since he wasn’t in the mood for custard, he chose the Maple and Chocolate versions for a taste test back at the office.
To his delight, the store clerk included two sticks of sugar with the doughnuts—a critical addition, in Go’s view. When he opened the bag, the doughnuts appeared somewhat plain, just as they had during the trial. But once torn apart, the familiar fluffy, airy texture reassured him of their quality.
Before taking a bite, Go sprinkled the doughnuts with sugar—a must, in his opinion. The moment he tasted the doughnut, a smile crept across his face. The exterior had a slight crunch, complementing the soft, light interior. He also recommended accepting the store’s offer to warm them up, as it enhanced their deliciousness.
Go had a hack for optimal sugar application: while sprinkling it on top works well, shaking the sugar inside the bag for an even coating makes the treat even more enjoyable. The combination of fried dough and sugar, especially the rich chocolate flavor, was so satisfying that it left him craving a glass of cold milk.
Go believes these doughnuts might even give popular chain Mister Donut some competition, making them a must-try for anyone near a participating 7-Eleven location.
