In the director’s assessment, even an attack capability 99% above today’s level would leave Bitcoin’s security unaffected.

He said the curves he referred to as “our elliptic curves” had seen no faster attacks, adding that concrete attacks would require a major technical advance.

In separate remarks on quantum computing, Blockstream Chief Marketing Officer Peter Bain said hardware limits put a computer capable of breaking Bitcoin’s cryptography decades away. Bain also said Blockstream researchers were studying signature schemes and that changes to Bitcoin would require agreement through the network’s consensus process, according to EconoTimes’ earlier coverage of his comments on Bitcoin’s resilience.
