BOCA RATON, Fla., Aug. 03, 2017 -- Today, ADT LLC, a leading provider of security and automation solutions for homes and businesses, celebrated one of its LifeSaver events in Wichita, KS where the Slaven family was reunited with rescuers who saved them from carbon monoxide in their home.
The ‘silent killer’ scare happened the night of June 8 in the Slaven farmhouse outside Cimarron, KS where Greg and Wrenn Slaven were sound asleep with their grandsons.
“We were unusually tired and I was even feeling light-headed,” said Wrenn Slaven. “What we didn’t know was that carbon monoxide was seeping from a faulty water heater in the basement and permeating the house.”
In a deep sleep, the family did not hear the beeping of the home’s ADT carbon monoxide detector nor the ringing of several phone calls. The calls were coming from dispatchers at ADT Customer Care Centers which were receiving emergency signals from the Slaven’s security system.
What finally woke the family were loud bangs at the front door and dogs barking from all the first responders arriving at the house.
“We almost had to break down the door, but fortunately Greg Slaven opened it and we told him to get everyone out,” said Chief Rex Beemer of the Cimarron Volunteer Fire Department. “When we went in with our portable air monitor, it indicated lethal levels of carbon monoxide in the home.”
Many believe had the family continued sleeping they would’ve never woken up. At today’s LifeSaver event, the Slaven family got to meet the ADT employees and first responders who helped save them.
“We are grateful beyond words to God, ADT and the firefighters,” said Wrenn Slaven.
As part of the event, ADT Chief Marketing Officer Jamie Haenggi presented $5,000 to Cimarron firefighters who will use it to buy three more hand-held monitors to detect dangerous gases in homes and businesses.
According to the CDC, 500 Americans die every year from carbon monoxide and up to 50,000 are poisoned. It’s estimated only 30% of American homes have C/O detectors.
