“Age of Empire 4” is still in development behind the doors of Relic Entertainment, and the developers are maintaining their silence about the fourth entry. This year’s E3 was expected to reveal a bit more about the sequel, but Relic and Microsoft opted not to showcase the game.
They did, however, promised that they'd be unveiling “Age of Empire 4” this year. Creative director Adam Isgreen said that they’re looking at either Gamescom or Microsoft’s XO to showcase the title.
That means that we could be seeing the unveiling of “Age of Empire 4” as early as next week since Gamescom is slated to take place on Aug. 20 to Aug. 24. If not, then we’ll just have to wait a few more months since XO will be held in London this November.
Development of Age of Empire 4 is going smoothly
So how far along is the development phase of “Age of Empire 4?” Details about this regard are muddy but Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s EVP of gaming, did say that Relic’s efforts have been going along swimmingly, PCGamesN reported.
The Redmond-based company also said that they'd been impressed at what Relic has done with “Age of Empire 4” so far, adding more momentum to the hype train surrounding the game. As for how much details are going to be unveiled in the aforementioned event, it seems that the developers are planning something big.
“We’ve got Gamescom coming up, and then XO later this year in London, so at the latest, you’ll hear more about ‘Age of Empires 4’ by XO. I will say that later this year, we will start taking the wraps off both Age 3 and Age 4,” Isgreen said.
Age of Empire 4 unlikely to come out this year
With regards to the release date of “Age of Empire 4,” it’s not expected to drop this year since there is still a lot of work to be done on the game. The earliest we can hope to see the next entry is in the last quarter of December next year, PCGamer reported.
Unsurprisingly, the developers are facing a lot of pressure from the community since there are a lot of people who are eagerly waiting to get their hands on “Age of Empire 4.” Isgreen said that despite the franchise’s age, there are still over a million players who are actively playing the game and it’s expected that more will be drawn towards the franchise once the sequel hit the market.
