On Tuesday night, beleaguered online rental portal Airbnb scored a victory when a San Francisco ballot measure failed to win the people’s votes on restricting the company’s operations. Referring to data from the city’s website, the Los Angeles Times reported that Proposition F was defeated by 55 percent of the 133,000 people who participated in the voting process.
Majority of the voters who said no to Proposition F viewed the measure as too harsh and thought that it was not accurate to blame Airbnb with the worsening housing crisis. Moreover, they said that limiting their rights was illegal, Macworld reported.
Endgadget said Proposition F is backed by workers and people in the hospitality industry, who believed that the current laws that regulate Airbnb should be stricter as the housing crisis drive up rent and land prices in San Francisco. Should the measure won, it would have limited people to rent their homes out to just 75 nights annually.
