When it was confirmed that “Altered Carbon” Season 2 was coming, there were still many who were not aware that there would be some major changes involved. For starters, the main actor most intimately associated with playing the protagonist, Takeshi Kovacs, will not be returning. Instead, Joel Kinnaman will be replaced by “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” star Anthony Mackie.
As Otaku Art notes, the show “Altered Carbon” is based on a book by Richard K. Morgan. It’s set around 360 years into the future, where humans have developed a method of transferring their consciousness into other bodies. These bodies are referred to as “sleeves” and it is how Anthony Mackie can step into the literal shoes of Takeshi Kovacs in “Altered Carbon” Season 2.
All through season 1 of the Netflix original, the main protagonist and several characters switched between sleeves all the time. As such, Joel Kinnaman shared Takeshi with other actors. At the end of the first season, Takeshi decided to give the sleeve he was inhabiting back. This left the character open to being taken over by another actor in “Altered Carbon” Season 2.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter back in July, it turns out that the next face to represent the ultimate body-hopping warrior will be Anthony Mackie. He is coming in with the advantage that fans are already somewhat aware of what to expect. However, with the show’s exploration of deep themes such as humanity and the morality behind “sleeves,” he has some big shoes to fill.
With regards to the possible air date of “Altered Carbon” Season 2, current predictions place it at the start of 2020. Production for the first season did take roughly two years. It only makes sense that season 2 might take the same amount of time. Then again, it’s not like fans would mind if it premiered in late 2019.
