Apple and Meta are reportedly discussing a potential AI collaboration for iOS 18, aiming to integrate Meta AI models into Apple Intelligence.
Meta AI Integration in iOS 18
According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Apple and Meta have reportedly discussed the possibility of forming a collaboration that would involve the incorporation of Meta AI models into iOS 18 for Apple Intelligence.
There is a high probability that this integration would be comparable to the agreement that Apple has reached with ChatGPT, which is the sole third-party partner that Apple Intelligence has at the moment.
Although the majority of Apple Intelligence's functionality is powered by Apple's own on-device and cloud models, the business is willing to assist users in transferring their demands regarding "world knowledge" to an artificial intelligence model that is provided by a third party.
Comparable to ChatGPT Agreement
Asking Siri a question like "how to create a five course meal featuring different tastes" will cause her to ask the user if they want to send the request to ChatGPT instead, especially with iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence enabled.
The request will be processed by OpenAI's ChatGPT model, and the response will be displayed inline within the Siri window if permission is given. ChatGPT will also be accessible through the Apple Intelligence Writing Tools panel, which will assist users who wish to develop pages of text or images that is photorealistic.
The agreement stipulates that ChatGPT is not permitted to collect user data and that it is required to destroy any information that has been gathered after requests have been handled. The integration is also made available to users at no cost, with ChatGPT-4o serving as the backend infrastructure.
Users have the option of signing in with their ChatGPT account in order to have access to the features of ChatGPT Plus.
Eventually, there will be more than only ChatGPT, as Apple has stated openly that it plans to provide a choice of models.
Progressive Rollout of Apple Intelligence
Reports in the Wall Street Journal (via 9to5Mac) suggest that Meta AI may also be involved in the future. Negotiations between Apple and Google, Gemini, Perplexity, Anthropic, and others have also taken place.
Later this year, with updates to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, Apple Intelligence will be accessible. First, to market in English in the United States, it will support the iPhone 15 Pro, as well as iPad and Mac versions powered by the M1 CPU or later.
A progressive rollout of support for more regions and languages will occur over time.
