The Associated Press called Iowa’s U.S. Senate race for Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek, giving Democrats a pickup in a state where Republicans had held both Senate seats for more than a decade.

Turek, a state representative from Council Bluffs, faced Republican U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson for the seat held by retiring Sen. Joni Ernst. Ernst announced last fall that she would not seek a third term.

EconoTimes previously covered Turek’s affordability agenda and bipartisan pitch. NPR reported that health care reform featured in Turek’s campaign and that he criticized Hinson’s support for President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. NPR says the measure cuts Medicaid spending nationwide by nearly $1 trillion.

NPR also linked pressure on Iowa agriculture to Trump’s tariffs and diesel costs that rose amid the war in Iran.
