Democrat Josh Turek won Iowa’s U.S. Senate race, flipping a Republican-held seat as Democrats secured control of the chamber in a state that had sent no Democrat to the Senate for more than a decade.

The Associated Press called the race for Turek over Republican U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson. The win builds on EconoTimes’ earlier coverage of the Iowa race call and seat pickup. The AP reported that Democrats had won Senate control, making Turek’s victory one of the Republican-held seats they flipped.

Republicans had held both of Iowa’s Senate seats for more than a decade. Republican Sen. Joni Ernst, who served two terms, is retiring.

President Donald Trump endorsed Hinson and carried Iowa in three consecutive presidential elections. Turek has served in Iowa’s Legislature since 2023 and represents Council Bluffs.

Before entering politics, Turek played wheelchair basketball professionally in Europe and represented the United States at four Paralympic Games.
