Ten-time NBA All-Star and Carmelo Anthony of the Los Angeles Laker is launching his own wine brand, VII(N) — The Seventh Estate, developed in collaboration with Stéphane Usseglio, a third-generation French winemaker.
Anthony's wine will debut this fall after a three-year development period.
It's created with Oath of Fidelity, a 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape that's made up of 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre.
The wine was fermented with indigenous yeast in concrete vats before being matured in a combination of concrete and big oak barrels for two years.
The outcome is a full-bodied red with "strong tannins" and a 14.5 percent ABV.
It has "subtle notes of cherries, lavender, sage, and peppercorns, blended with blonde tobacco and dry tea leaves," as well as "flavors of smoked meats, dried fruits, and river stones," according to the description.
During the 2022 Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, Anthony will appear with CJ McCollum and Dwyane Wade in a sold-out session moderated by Lobos tequila CEO Dia Simms.
The wine-loving NBA three will talk about life after basketball and how to develop legacy wine companies.
