Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has condemned an apparent deliberate car attack on independent lawmaker Helen Haines, who remains in critical condition after undergoing emergency surgery following the incident in Wangaratta, Victoria.

Speaking on Tuesday, Albanese said preliminary evidence suggested the driver intentionally targeted Haines outside her parliamentary office on Monday. The vehicle reportedly made a U-turn before striking the politician, raising serious concerns about the safety of elected officials in Australia.

Haines was reportedly standing near her vehicle, either loading or unloading items from its trunk, when the attack occurred. Wangaratta is located approximately three hours northeast of Melbourne.

Albanese told ABC News that the circumstances strongly indicated the collision was intentional rather than an accidental loss of vehicle control.

Authorities arrested a 43-year-old man in connection with the incident. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including counter-terrorism investigators, are examining the circumstances surrounding the attack. Police described the incident as isolated and expected to question the suspect on Tuesday morning.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke revealed further disturbing details, citing witness accounts that suggested the driver reversed the vehicle and struck Haines a second time. A bystander reportedly intervened and removed the alleged attacker from the car.

The attack has intensified concerns about political violence in Australia, where elected representatives traditionally maintain close contact with constituents and frequently attend public events without extensive security arrangements.

Although authorities have not established a motive, Albanese acknowledged that threats against Australian politicians have increased significantly in recent years. He urged the public to reject hostility and political division while maintaining respectful democratic debate.

Haines, a former nurse, midwife and academic, entered federal parliament in 2019 as an independent representative for the Victorian electorate of Indi. She subsequently secured re-election in 2022 and 2025, strengthening her position as a prominent independent voice in Australian politics.

The prime minister emphasized the importance of preserving Australia's tradition of community engagement and political accessibility, warning that escalating hostility could undermine national unity.

As investigators continue examining the alleged deliberate vehicle attack, attention remains focused on Haines' recovery, the suspect's potential motive and the broader implications for parliamentary security across Australia.
