‘Avatar 2’ director James Cameron revealed that the upcoming sequel will portray a family saga between Jake, Neytiri and their children. He also confirmed that although they haven’t moved the film’s Christmas release date as of the moment, they would if they need to.
During an interview with Variety, Cameron finally offered some new details for the upcoming sequel to the 2009 blockbuster hit of the same name. The acclaimed filmmaker said, “The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake and Neytiri and their children. It’s more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans.”
It was previously speculated that Jake would marry Neytiri and become the Omaticaya’s next chieftain. It seems that the new film will feature their Na’vi children as well. Sam Worthington is set to reprise his role as the human-turned-Na’vi Jake Sully while Zoe Saldana is set to return as the Neytiri of the Omaticaya and Jake’s love interest.
According to /Film, the upcoming film was originally scheduled to premiere on December 2018. Cameron said, “We haven’t moved that target yet, but we will if we need to… The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern. I want them to be released as close together as possible. If it’s an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, I want to make sure that we’re able to fulfill on that promise.”
Cameron’s first film was released to positive reviews from critics and earned massive commercial success, breaking several box office records. According to The Numbers, ‘Avatar’ earned $2.78 million worldwide on a production budget of $425 million. It was also deemed the highest-grossing film of all time surpassing Cameron’s own ‘Titanic’.
Other returning cast members include Stephen Lang as Miles Quaritch and Sigourney Weaver. It is unclear whether Weaver will be returning to play her original character Dr. Grace Augustine since she was killed off in the first film.
‘Avatar 2’ is an upcoming action-adventure and science-fiction film is directed, co-written and co-produced by James Cameron. Jon Landau will also be producing and Peter M. Tobyansen will serve as executive producer. The sequel will be distributed by the Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation in the United States.
