As of this writing, fans still have more than 700 days left before seeing the long-awaited sequel film “Avatar 2.” But, note that the cast and production crew have already made a lot of progress making it possible for the first trailer to come out this year.
By “a lot of progress,” it means the cast and crew, under the leadership of Oscar-winning director James Cameron, have actually finished filming “Avatar 2” and “Avatar 3” a couple of months ago. But, do not expect this to shorten the period of waiting for the sequel film.
Fans will still have to wait around two years before “Avatar 2” premieres on movie theaters. The movie is given a Dec. 18, 2020 release date, which is exactly 11 years since the first title’s premiere in the United States. Fans can only hope that the continuous filming progress means there are no further delays in sight.
In late October 2018, cast member Sigourney Weaver confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that they have wrapped up filming for “Avatar 2” and “Avatar 3.” When asked about her character in the upcoming sequels, Weaver revealed, “It’s a continuous character. We just finished shooting two and three. We shot it in L.A.” The veteran actress also confirmed that they have started filming for “Avatar 4” at the time.
With the principal photography for “Avatar 2” already done for months now, there is a big possibility that the first official trailer could arrive as early as one year before the premiere. Reports speculate that a preview might come sometime in late 2019.
One of the most exciting changes in “Avatar 2” is in its setting. There are several indications that the underwater location serves as a major part of the sequel film. There were even rumors that the official title would be “Avatar 2: The Way of Water.”
Weaver also revealed some of their experiences in filming underwater. “James has announced publicly that there’s a lot of underwater work, so we learned how to free dive and we did many scenes underwater, which was challenging and kind of cool. … The one scary thing is sometimes you have to be weighted down to be on the bottom,” said the “Avatar 2” actress.
