BP PLC has appointed Ian Tyler as its permanent chairman with immediate effect, completing a leadership transition following months of governance changes at the British energy giant.
Tyler had served as BP’s interim chair since May 26, 2026, after joining the company’s board as a non-executive director in April 2025. BP said his permanent appointment followed an extensive search that evaluated both internal and external candidates.
The leadership change comes after BP’s board removed former chairman Albert Manifold, citing significant concerns related to governance standards, oversight and conduct.
Tyler brings extensive boardroom experience across the energy, natural resources and engineering industries. During his non-executive career, he has worked alongside more than 15 chief executives at listed and privately held companies.
Alongside his new role at BP, Tyler currently serves as chairman of building materials company Grafton Group and as senior independent director at mining giant Anglo American. His previous positions include chairman of Cairn Energy and non-executive director at defense and aerospace company BAE Systems.
BP also announced another upcoming change to its board. Amanda Blanc, the company’s senior independent director who oversaw the appointments of both Manifold and Tyler, will not seek re-election at BP’s next annual general meeting. She will remain in her position until the company identifies a successor.
Blanc said BP’s board unanimously supported Tyler’s appointment, highlighting his experience in challenging and supporting executive leadership teams while maintaining strong corporate governance and shareholder oversight.
She added that Tyler demonstrated those qualities while serving as interim chairman, earning the confidence of BP’s board and executive management through his leadership, judgment and integrity.
The appointment gives Tyler responsibility for leading BP’s board as the oil major navigates its strategic priorities and seeks to strengthen governance following the recent leadership upheaval.
