‘Bates Motel’ season 5’s episode 5, titled “Dreams Die First,” is set to follow Norman as he resumes therapy with Dr. Edwards in order to fight off the demons in his head. Meanwhile, Rihanna will make her first much-anticipated appearance as Marion.
The synopsis for “Dreams Die First” posted on TV Guide reads, “Norman (Freddie Highmore) attempts to piece together Mother's (Vera Farmiga) movements. Elsehwere: Dylan (Max Thieriot) and Emma (Olivia Cooke) confront an ugly truth while Sam's (Austin Nichols) girlfriend Marion (Rihanna) makes a spur-of-the-moment decision with far-reaching consequences.”
The promo for episode 5 reveals that Norman is about to confront his dangerous hallucinations of his long dead mother Norma. He admits, “I see mother when she’s not really there and sometimes I become her.” It seems that Norman is doing the best he can to keep himself in check after nearly killing off his friend in the previous episode.
It is revealed that Norman has resumed his therapy sessions with Dr. Edwards (Damon Gupton), who was the first one to realize that Norman was suffering from a disorder that causes him to have a split personality.
In another scene from the promo, Norman is told by Sherrifff Jane Greene (Brooke Smith) that he is being blamed by some people for the death of Norma. He replies, “Please. Much easier to blame it on the kid who just got out of the mental institution.”
The final moments of the promo also shows Rihanna’s iconic Marion Crane driving through a heavy downpour of rain. She then sees a sign that says “Bates Motel.” This hints that viewers can expect the character to check into a grim fate in the upcoming episodes.
According to Gold Derby, the Grammy-award winning Barbadian singer-songwiter and actress is set to take on the role made famous by Janet Leigh in the original film adaptation from the 1960s directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Leigh garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe Award win for Best Supporting Actress for her role.
‘Bates Motel’ season 5’s episode 5, titled “Dreams Die First,” is scheduled to air on March 20, 2017 on A&E. It was directed by Nestor Carbonell. It will be followed by episode 6, titled “Marion,” scheduled to be released on March 27.
