Montana Senator Jon Tester, a longtime supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris, shocked many by refusing to endorse her 2024 presidential run. On Monday, October 21, Tester told local Montana media that he would not back Harris, citing his own re-election bid as the reason. This decision is a significant departure from his previous support for Harris, whom he endorsed as Joe Biden’s running mate in 2020.
“I’m not endorsing her because I’m up for election,” Tester said when asked why he wasn't offering his endorsement for Harris this time around. The senator’s comments mark a sharp turn from his earlier role in recruiting Harris to run for the U.S. Senate in 2016, showing how political pressure and a tight re-election race are reshaping his stance.
From Longtime Ally to Election Strategy
Tester’s history with Harris runs deep. Not only did he support her vice-presidential candidacy in 2020, but he also played a role in her decision to run for the Senate in California years earlier. Now, with Montana’s voters leaning heavily toward Donald Trump, Tester is distancing himself from Harris, trying to rebrand himself as a "moderate" in a bid to win over more conservative constituents.
However, his voting record tells a different story. Tester has consistently voted in line with Harris’s policies, including his support for legislation that allowed men to participate in women’s sports—an issue that has gained significant attention among critics. During an earlier encounter in July, Tester dodged questions from Loomer Unleashed about his stance on these controversial policies.
“Why did you allow men to play women’s sports?” a reporter asked. Tester refused to answer, leading the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) to release a video of the interaction, branding it as a moment of cowardice. “Jon Tester hides behind his handlers to dodge questions,” the NRSC wrote.
A Moderate or Another Harris Ally?
Despite his attempt to portray himself as a moderate Democrat, critics argue that Tester’s record shows his strong alignment with Harris and other progressive figures in the Democratic Party. His refusal to endorse Harris is seen as a desperate political maneuver to save face with Montana’s increasingly conservative voters.
Adding fuel to the fire, Tester has faced criticism for previous statements about Donald Trump. In a past remark, he suggested that Trump "needed to be punched in the face to stop him from winning," a comment that has come back to haunt him during the current political climate. President Trump himself has not held back in targeting Tester, calling him "one of the most sinister accomplices" in Harris’s agenda.
Trump Weighs In
At a recent rally in Montana, Trump took aim at Tester, calling him “one of the biggest phonies in American politics.” Trump made it clear that he views Tester as complicit in Kamala Harris’s “plot to demolish America’s borders” and urged Montana voters to reject Tester at the ballot box in the upcoming election.
As Trump’s influence in Montana grows, Tester’s attempt to position himself as a moderate is drawing skepticism from voters who see through his efforts to distance himself from Harris. For many, the senator’s voting record and past endorsements speak louder than his recent claims of moderation.
With Trump leading by a wide margin in Montana, the upcoming election will be a litmus test for Tester’s political future—and his ability to walk the fine line between loyalty to his party and the demands of his voters.
