HORSHAM, Pa., Aug. 30, 2016 -- Grupo Bimbo announced the second annual Global Energy Race, which will be held on Sunday, September 25, 2016 in 37 cities around the world. Bimbo Bakeries USA, the U.S. arm of Grupo Bimbo, will host the races held in the United States. The races offer a 10K run option, certified by USA Track and Field, as well as a 3K family fun run/walk.
The race, started in 2015, was originally held in 22 cities, from Beijing to Long Beach, California. In 2016, the race adds 15 additional locations, for a total of 37 races to be held globally – four being held in the United States including two new host cities in Arizona and Florida:
- Long Beach, CA (Marina Green Park ‒ 386 E. Shoreline Drive, Long Beach, CA 90802)
- Orlando, FL (Festival Park ‒ 2911 E. Robinson St., Orlando, FL 32803)
- Philadelphia, PA (Penn’s Landing ‒ 101 S Christopher Columbus Blvd., Philadelphia, PA 19106)
- Phoenix, AZ (Scottsdale Sports Complex ‒ 8081 E. Princess Drive, Scottsdale, AZ 85255)
The 2016 race will also be a Guinness World Records attempt: The most number of cities participating in the same race on the same day.
For each kilometer completed by each participant, Bimbo Bakeries USA will donate two slices of bread to a local Feeding America food bank – one loaf of bread per completed 10K. First place male and female winners of the 10K race in each participating city will receive an all-expenses paid trip to run in any 2017 Global Energy Race participant city.
All participants will receive a Global Energy Kappa t-shirt, sling bag and towel. The 10K runners will receive a custom finishers medal upon completion while the 3K participants will receive a custom finishers pin upon completion. Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers in each city.
Starting with the 2016 race, both the t-shirts and medals will be part of a collectable series. This year, the image is from Beijing and each subsequent year the items will feature different symbols of inspiration, persistence and global nature.
“We believe the food industry plays an important role in educating the general public about healthy choices and positively impacting lifestyles, especially for future generations,” said Fred Penny, president at Bimbo Bakeries USA. “The pursuit of health and well-being is no longer a trend – it has become a social imperative around the world. Small actions such as walking or running can really improve our overall quality of life.”
Grupo Bimbo promotes a healthy lifestyle obtained through a balanced diet, smart eating habits and the daily practice of physical activity. The Global Energy Race emphasizes the importance of “energy balance" among communities – meaning the energy obtained from food should be equal to the energy used or spent from moving or exercising.
Global sponsors of the race include FOX Sports, Powerade and Kappa.
