Binance said Friday that blockchain partners had frozen about $3 billion in affected assets after a security incident the exchange estimates had an impact of about $6.3 billion.
The exchange said withdrawals were temporarily suspended while deposits remained available. It said its SAFU fund and company funds would absorb the losses.
Binance’s preliminary account points to a possible compromise of a DevOps engineer’s laptop. The exchange said that may have allowed an attacker to reach a service container and initiate unauthorized withdrawals. It said it had found no evidence that wallet private keys were exposed.
Reuters reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and United States Secret Service (USSS) are among the agencies working with Binance, citing a person familiar with the situation. Binance’s public notice refers to law-enforcement partners but does not identify those agencies.
Binance plans to release technical findings after completing its review and verifying its conclusions. It also plans to revise its proof-of-reserves information after remediation.
