Blue Shield of California appointed former Lyft Chief Financial Officer Erin Brewer to its board, adding a finance executive as the health plan pursues affordability and changes to care delivery.

The California nonprofit announced the appointment Oct. 15 and said Brewer’s experience would support efforts to modernize care, improve the consumer experience and strengthen long-term financial stewardship. Pamela DeCoste, chair of the board, said Brewer brings “a combination of financial discipline, operational leadership and experience transforming complex organizations.”

Blue Shield said Brewer’s career includes more than 25 years in finance and operations across a range of industries. The company listed previous leadership roles at Charles Schwab, Atlassian and McKesson Corporation. Brewer earned an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Purdue University.

Brewer became Lyft’s CFO on July 10, 2023. In a Sept. 9 filing, Lyft said she planned to leave the role effective Sept. 28 and advise the company through Dec. 15. Blue Shield’s announcement identifies her as Lyft’s former CFO.

Lyft reported net income of $22.8 million for 2024, compared with a net loss of $340.3 million in 2023. The company said the result marked its first full year with a net profit under generally accepted accounting principles, or GAAP.

Blue Shield describes itself as a taxpaying nonprofit and an independent member of the Blue Shield Association. It says its California plans serve nearly six million people through health, dental, vision, Medicaid and Medicare coverage. The organization lists 6,800 employees and annual revenue above $28 billion.

Lyft’s filing said the company expected to report third-quarter 2026 earnings in November, without giving a specific date.
