Bodum USA Inc. is recalling about 5.9 million French presses in the United States after reports of broken glass carafes and burns prompted a warning from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Bodum USA identified 70 reports of carafes breaking during use, including 48 reports of consumers being burned, the CPSC notice says. The recall covers 8-cup and 12-cup presses with replaceable glass carafes in the Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya lines.

The CPSC says metal utensils can damage the glass, raising the risk that a carafe with a crack or other damage will break while in use. Consumers should stop stirring with metal utensils and avoid using cracked or damaged carafes. Bodum said it will provide affected U.S. consumers with a free plastic stirring spoon and warning label, and include them with future products.

The presses were sold in the United States from 1974 through October 2026 at Target, Walmart, coffee and home goods stores, and online for about $15 to $65, the CPSC said. Consumers can call Bodum at 888-879-8213 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.
