Brazil’s revised Bolsa Família calendar puts payments for all 10 recipient groups ahead of the Oct. 25 runoff, with the final group scheduled to receive October benefits on Oct. 21.
The revised calendar ends Oct. 21, compared with Oct. 30 under the original schedule. Five of the 10 groups defined by recipients’ identification numbers had initially been due to receive October benefits after the vote. Those payments are now scheduled for the days before the runoff.
Brazil’s electoral authority has confirmed President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro as the runoff candidates. The payment change puts the monthly benefit in recipients’ hands before the election, while the government has cited weather risks as its reason for revising the calendar.
The Ministério do Desenvolvimento e Assistência Social, Família e Combate à Fome (MDS) said earlier access would help vulnerable families prepare for possible droughts, floods and supply disruptions linked to El Niño. It recorded 518 federal recognitions of emergencies or states of calamity in August and September 2026, compared with 253 in the same period a year earlier.
Payments are organized by the final digit of each recipient’s Número de Identificação Social (NIS). Recipients whose numbers end in 1 were paid Oct. 19, and those with numbers ending in 2 are scheduled for Oct. 20. All remaining groups are due to receive their October payments Oct. 21.
October is the first month with a higher minimum monthly benefit of 691 reais per family, up from 600 reais, the ministry said. The increase was also covered in EconoTimes’ report on Brazil’s welfare budget plans.
The ministry cited its decision to unify emergency payments during the 2024 Rio Grande do Sul floods as a precedent for changing the calendar. Ministry records also document an accelerated welfare payment schedule in October 2022.
MDS said it will advance payment schedules again in November and December. The next scheduled event is the Oct. 25 runoff between Lula and Bolsonaro.
