Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio agreed to arrange bilateral talks before the G20 leaders’ summit, creating a diplomatic follow-up to their brief Atlanta exchange.
Folha de S.Paulo reported that Brazil’s Foreign Ministry, known as Itamaraty, said the planned discussion would cover bilateral issues. Correio Braziliense separately cited ministry sources confirming the agreement. Folha reported that the two ministers did not discuss specific issues during their brief exchange. No date or venue has been announced.
Vieira and Rubio spoke briefly at a reception for G20 foreign ministers in Atlanta on Oct. 30. The U.S. Department of State said Rubio hosted the Atlanta ministerial, scheduled for Oct. 30-31. A department announcement from May also listed economic challenges and international cooperation among the ministers’ agenda themes.
Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) said President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the Oct. 25 runoff with 64,256,232 votes, or 51.79% of valid votes. Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro received 59,826,041 votes, or 48.21%. The TSE said the result became mathematically irreversible at 8:09 p.m. ET on Oct. 25.
The Associated Press reported that Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro rejected the result and called for it to be annulled. President Donald Trump criticized the vote, saying, “The election was really strange, and I thought it was terrible,” the AP reported. An unnamed senior U.S. Department of State official told the AP that visas would be issued to Flávio Bolsonaro and his family after the loss. The AP also reported that Flávio’s father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, went to Florida after losing the 2022 election to Lula and returned to Brazil three months later.
The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) schedule places the leaders’ summit at Trump National Doral in Miami on Dec. 14-15, with Trump due to host.
