Briferendum Aftermath Series: Conservative leadership election begins today

Election to replace Prime Minister David Cameron who resigned post-U.K. referendum has officially started today and the long race is likely to end on 9th September. This leadership election is very crucial given the fact that the person chosen will have quite a big say over the upcoming strategies with regard to Britain’s negotiation with the European Union.

There are five contestants detailed below -

  • Theresa May: Front runner to replace David Cameron. This pro-remain politician has been Home Secretary since 2010 and member of the parliament since 1997. She has called for a cautious approach and prepare negotiating tactics before triggering Article 50. She said she will be in no hurry to trigger the Article this year.

  • Stephen Crabb: He has been the member of the parliament since 2005 and has been the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions since March this year. He is not very likely to secure the win.

  • Michel Gove: This conservative party member first became the member of the parliament in 2005 and has been a popular face of the “leave” campaign. After winning the referendum Gove surprising withdrew his support for Johnson as a leader of the party and pressed with his own bid.

  • Liam Fox: Mr. Fox has been the member of the parliament since 1992 and been former Secretary for State Defense. He has said the UK should leave the European Union in 2019.

  • Andrea Leadsom:  First elected as a member in 2010 general election. She is likely to be the biggest rival to Theresa May’s bid to become the leader. Boris Johnson the most prominent face of the “Leave” campaign has thrown his weight behind Leadsom.
