Briferendum Aftermath Series: EU leaders toughen stance over concessions

European leaders made it quite clear after their first ever 27 member summit that there will be no cherry picking deal available for Britain like Angela Merkel said in the German parliament, Bundestag. It is quite clear after the summit that “Leave” campaigners won’t have it easy and their claims that Britain will maintain access to the single market without freedom of movement may not hold true. A statement was added in the joint statement that says, “access to the single market requires acceptance of all four freedoms”, which is directly referring to the European Principles on the free movement of capital, services, goods and most importantly labour. In addition to that leaders have called on Britain to quickly begin the formal divorce process, which requires triggering the Article 50.

Most of the leaders including French president Francois Hollande said that without triggering the official process, which is Article 50, there could be no negotiations, thus crashing the hopes of the leaders of the United Kingdom who were planning for an informal negotiation before triggering the Article 50.

If the European leaders maintain their current stance then we have moved closer to the Brexit and without a fresh deal or change in treaty, options to avoid Brexit will become lesser.
