Briferendum Aftermath Series: Political freedom is bigger issue than immigration

At the Euro group leaders meet, just after the referendum results, former UK Prime Minister David Cameron had told his EU counterparts that if they had given him the immigration brake he asked for the result of the referendum could have been different. However, a survey by Lord Ashcroft Polls, suggest otherwise.

Immigration is a big issue but not the biggest.

In an article before the referendum, we at FxWirePro suggested that exit backers may win the day riding on a theme that has seen the rise of dictators to leaders like Donald Trump or Nicola Sturgeon, which is nationalism. However, at the time of writing of that article, we didn’t have any proof of such being a major concern other than the fact that Britons feel their roles as an inferior one inside the European Union compared to Germany or France or even Spain and Italy. The article is available here, http://www.econotimes.com/Briferendum-Series-UKs-weaker-self-perception-inside-EU-remains-a-major-decisive-factor-207499

In a survey, when leave voters asked, why had they voted to leave, a majority of the people said they voted on the principle that the decision about the UK should be taken in the UK.  The second most important issue that was highlighted was the immigration. People felt exit could be the best solution to halt immigration. The third point that was highlighted was that remaining means UK have no or little choice about how the EU expands its membership.

If immigration is not the biggest issue, the lawmakers in the UK have some more room for negotiation.
