Briferendum Aftermath Series: Theresa May wins the first round of Tory leadership election

As expected, the home secretary, Theresa May won the first round of Tory leadership election and that with huge margins. May won the backing of 165 members of the Parliament (MPs). Her biggest rival, Andrea Leadsom who was endorsed by former London Mayor and the most popular face of the “Lave” camp, Boris Johnson secured the backing of 66 MPs. Michel Gove who campaigned alongside Mr. Johnson but refused to endorse him as a leader of the Conservative Party secured supports of 44 MPs, followed by Stephen Crabb who was endorsed by 34 MPs.

Liam Fox, former secretary of state for defense secured the backing of just 17 MPs and as per the rule, he is now out of the race officially. Shortly after the result, Stephen Crabb withdrew his candidacy. So the battle is now between the three, Theresa May, Michel Gove, and Andrea Leadsom. Among them, two would be chosen for the final round open to all conservative party members nationwide. With the backing of 165 MPs, May is sure to go to the final round, so the battle is between Andrea and Gove.

Next voting date is tomorrow 7th July. Final leadership result will be announced on September 9th.
