Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction Minister Bernard M. Doro outlined plans for cash assistance to 7.5 million households in Nigeria, BusinessDay reported, as September food inflation stood at 19.59% year over year.

The National Bureau of Statistics said headline inflation eased to 14.63% year over year in September from 15.39% in August. BusinessDay reported that Doro gave the household target during the 32nd Nigerian Economic Summit’s “Connecting Growth to Households” session in Abuja on Tuesday, Oct. 27. He also cited skills training, farmer grants and collateral-free loans as support for vulnerable Nigerians.

The reported target is 100,000 below the 7.6 million households in a federal emergency-transfer plan announced Aug. 24. The Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation said that plan was part of a $1 billion Renewed Hope Social Protection Programme.

On Aug. 26, the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction said the Household Prosperity and Economic Social Protection Project (HOPE-SP) had launched. The ministry described it as a framework for coordinating humanitarian aid, social protection and poverty-reduction programs. It cited fragmented programs and uncoordinated registries as problems the project aims to address through unified registries, digital delivery and stronger coordination.

The August announcements do not establish whether Doro’s reported target is linked to the emergency-transfer plan or HOPE-SP. BusinessDay did not specify the new round’s payment amount or rollout date.
