Democrat Amy Acton won Ohio’s governor’s race, CBS News projected Nov. 3, giving the party a victory in a state that backed Donald Trump by 11 points in 2024.

CBS News reported that Acton made affordability a campaign focus, drawing on her childhood experience of homelessness. Republican Vivek Ramaswamy emphasized government efficiency and used his business record as a model, the outlet reported.

Acton, 60, led Ohio’s health department under Republican Gov. Mike DeWine during the COVID-19 pandemic, CBS News reported. Ramaswamy, 41, is a Cincinnati entrepreneur and billionaire. DeWine could not seek another term under state term limits, according to CBS.

CBS News reported that Acton’s estranged mother accused her of lying in an October spot from Ramaswamy’s campaign, which the outlet described as a $4 million ad. Democrats and many Republicans, including DeWine and Sen. Jon Husted, condemned the ad. President Donald Trump said he supported it, while Vice President JD Vance said he was “disgusted” by Republicans who opposed it.

Before the election, polling did not establish whether the video shifted voter support, as EconoTimes previously reported.
