Canada has appointed Bob Rae, a former ambassador to the United Nations, to chair the International Development Research Centre’s Board of Governors, which guides a federal funder of development research.

Secretary of State (International Development) Randeep Sarai announced the appointment Monday, Nov. 2. Rae recently served as Canada’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations. His public service also includes serving as premier of Ontario and interim leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, according to Global Affairs Canada.

The centre is a federal Crown corporation established in 1970 and part of Canada’s international assistance effort. Global Affairs Canada says IDRC backs research in developing countries, shares findings with researchers and policymakers, and convenes global partners. The announcement identifies low- and middle-income countries as partners and says the centre’s work is intended to benefit vulnerable and marginalized people.

IDRC’s Board of Governors can have up to 14 members. They oversee the centre’s stewardship and help set its direction.

IDRC President Julie Delahanty welcomed Rae’s appointment, saying his experience in diplomacy and public life would inform the centre’s research and partnerships.
