Spain’s Canary Islands saw 3,261 migrant rescues in six days, Reuters reported, while regional leader Fernando Clavijo said the arrival pace neared the 2024 record amid pressure on local services. The six-day rescue total covered Nov. 1-6.
Clavijo said Friday that some days had already exceeded the 2024 benchmark. He said buses joined the migration response, while medical teams traveled from other islands to La Restinga.
Al Jazeera’s Nov. 6 video report described the Atlantic crossing from West Africa as among the world’s deadliest migration routes. The outlet said arrivals were straining reception and emergency services and put the count above 3,200 for those six days.
The regional government earlier reported sea arrivals were 285% higher in October than in October 2025, in a previous account of the monthly increase. That comparison covered sea arrivals across the archipelago. Reuters also reported that El Hierro, one of the islands receiving migrants, has about 11,400 residents.
