Mao Ning’s statement did not say whether the three leaders had agreed to meet; she said China was maintaining communication with relevant parties.

The proposal involves Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. Mao said, “China is maintaining communication with relevant parties.”

Officials from China, Russia and the United States were discussing arrangements for a possible meeting on the summit's margins, the Financial Times reported Tuesday. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the newspaper that work was underway to organize the meeting. Citing a person familiar with the talks, the paper also reported that Washington and Moscow were pressing Beijing to agree to it.

Anadolu reported that Xi was scheduled to host leaders and delegates representing APEC's 21 member economies in Shenzhen. Putin and Trump were among those expected to attend.

Peskov had previously said work was underway and no date had been set; see the earlier account of his comments on the proposed meeting. The APEC summit itself is set for Nov. 18-19 in Shenzhen, Anadolu reported.
