In an unprecedented move, China’s central bank (PBOC) injected approximately $52 billion (349 billion yuan) into its financial system via overnight reverse repos on August 14. Marking the first mid-month operation of its kind in the PBOC's history, the central bank announced plans to conduct up to 600 billion yuan daily in liquidity support across several days to ease cash constraints tied to corporate tax settlements. While designed to fine-tune liquidity during a period of strong M2 money supply growth, the initiative signals an assertive push by Beijing to keep its banking system well-lubricated.
Despite the historic influx of capital, risk assets have responded with noticeable restraint. Bitcoin dipped and remained stuck in a range-bound near $64,000, as cryptocurrency traders hesitated to price in the liquidity surge immediately. Analysts suggest the market is adopting a cautious "wait-and-see" approach, weighing whether these targeted, temporary central bank operations will actually translate into broader, sustained demand for risk assets or remain strictly contained within domestic banking channels.
