Coca-Cola will begin using a new tethered closure designed to remain intact with its PET bottle, making it less likely to be littered and more likely to be recycled.
The lightweight, tethered closure was designed by first plastic packaging manufacturer Berry Global Group.
The EU Directive 2019/204 requires plastic beverage bottles up to 3 liters to have closures that remain attached to the container throughout their intended use from July 2024.
The collaboration helps progress Coca-Cola’s goal to make 100% of its packaging recyclable globally by 2025.
Berry's latest tethered closure for Coca-Cola has a unique tamper-evident band that, when broken, has no effect on the closure's capacity to stay attached. It is placed out of the way for drinking but is still simple to shut again.
When open, it offers a wide angle for convenient beverage access and convenient sipping while traveling.
Berry's unique CompactFlip hinge system serves as the foundation for its closure for Coca-Cola. It is the first to be used with the brand-new, thin 26mm GME30.40 neck created by the Berry-affiliated Cetie (The International Technical Centre for Bottling) Single-Use Plastics Group.
The new neck finish delivers an over 1g saving in PET compared to the current PCO-1881 neck. Combined with a 10% weight reduction from the Berry closure, the new pack is now around 20% lighter than the PCO-1881 version.
