Avid fans of the “Code Geass” franchise have finally received their much-awaited announcement — a new anime series is in the works. The upcoming project is confirmed with the title “Code Geass: Z of the Recapture,” however, it was not clearly stated if Lelouch, also known now as L.L., will be part of it.

‘Code Geass: Z of the Recapture’ plot: Return of Lelouch or L.L. seems unlikely (Spoilers ahead!)

The upcoming projects under the 10-year plan for the “Code Geass” franchise were announced last Saturday, which also happens to be Lelouch’s birthday, during a livestream event. “Code Geass: Z of the Recapture” is confirmed to be an upcoming anime series that will feature a storyline set after the events of the 2019 film “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection.”

Fans might be able to get hints from the movie on whether or not they could be seeing Lelouch or L.L. back in “Code Geass: Z of the Recapture.” Lelouch was fully resurrected in the movie and played a major role in saving Nunnally and defeating the rulers of Zilkhistan, who were against world peace as it negatively affected their business that depending on exporting mercenaries.

After eliminating all the threats, Lelouch reaffirmed Suzaku as the new official Zero. He also assumed a new identity named L.L., which somehow served as his marriage proposal to C.C. before starting a new journey together.

Going from that ending, there is a good chance that “Code Geass: Z of the Recapture” will feature a plot that is primarily independent of Lelouch’s character. Fans on Reddit also point out the obvious absence of L.L. from the few promo images released for the upcoming series.

‘Code Geass: Z of the Recapture’ production, release date

“Code Geass: Z of the Recapture” will be produced by Sunrise studio with director Yoshimitsu Ohashi and Takahiro Kimura for character design. The production staff does not include familiar writers from the original series, but Noboru Kimura has been confirmed to write the scripts. Some of Kimura’s notable scriptwriting works include “PERSONA 5 the Animation,” “Mobile Suit Gundam AGE,” and “Princess Principal: Crown Handler.”

The release date for “Code Geass: Z of the Recapture” has not been announced yet. But since it is billed as the next major project for the franchise’s 10-year plan, it is likely to premiere sometime in 2021.
