A man whose vehicle was swept away by a river during flooding in Ghisonaccia, Corsica, was found dead late Tuesday, Oct. 20, BFMTV reported Wednesday, citing the prefecture; a woman who was with him escaped.
Anadolu Ajansı reported the man was in his 60s. It described a Mediterranean storm that brought intense rain to southeastern France, with Corsica among the hardest-hit areas. BFMTV put the 24-hour rainfall at the Solenzara air base station at 612 millimeters, roughly five times the area’s usual October total.
Dozens of vehicles were caught in rising water, Anadolu Ajansı reported. Flooded roads left drivers stranded. Rescuers evacuated some motorists, while others were provided overnight accommodation.
In a separate case, firefighters found a person dead Tuesday in Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts, in the Bouches-du-Rhone department, Anadolu Ajansı reported. Firefighters said the circumstances were under investigation. BFMTV reported Wednesday that the storm episode had ended and no French department remained under an orange weather alert.
