Authorities are searching for the gunman who fatally shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in what police describe as a targeted attack. Thompson, 50, was killed on December 4 outside the Hilton Midtown hotel in New York City as he walked to a corporate event. Investigators have uncovered chilling clues, including cryptic messages written on shell casings, that have intensified the manhunt.
A Calculated Attack in Midtown
According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, the shooter appeared to meticulously plan the attack, arriving at the scene before Thompson and lying in wait. Surveillance footage captured the suspect’s movements before and after the shooting. At approximately 6:44 a.m., Thompson was approached from behind and shot multiple times, including once in the back and once in the calf.
Forensic evidence recovered at the scene included three live and three discharged 9 mm rounds. The words "delay," "deny," and "depose" were written on the shell casings, suggesting a possible motive tied to disputes with the insurance industry. Law enforcement officials believe the phrases reference a known critique of insurance practices, heightening speculation that the attack may have been ideologically driven.
The suspect, described as a light-skinned man wearing a cream-colored jacket and black-and-white sneakers, fled the scene on a bike before discarding a backpack in Central Park. Police later recovered the bag, which contained a jacket that may link the suspect to the crime.
Chilling Clues and Nationwide Search
As the investigation continues, the suspect’s escape route has been mapped using surveillance footage. After abandoning the bike, the man took a cab to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, where he may have boarded a bus bound for Atlanta. Police are also analyzing a cellphone and coffee cup discarded along the route for potential DNA evidence.
The FBI has joined the investigation and is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest. New York City Mayor Eric Adams revealed that police know the name of the person of interest but are withholding it to avoid tipping off the suspect.
