Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed was projected to defeat Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s Nov. 3 election, a result the Associated Press said would mark a first for Muslim representation in the U.S. Senate.

CBS News projected the race at 2:29 a.m. EST Nov. 4. ABC News also projected El-Sayed as the winner.

The Associated Press said the outcome would make El-Sayed the first Muslim elected to the Senate. EconoTimes previously covered his bid to become the chamber’s first Muslim member.

El-Sayed’s campaign says he launched his Senate bid April 17, 2025. Wayne County announced in March 2023 that he would become director of its Health, Human and Veterans Services Department.
