With “Destiny” finally winding down, it’s time for “Bungie” to focus its attention on the sequel. Based on what the Activision said during the most recent quarterly earnings call, it would seem that “Bungie” is doing exactly that and more.
Eric Hirshberg, Activision’s Publishing CEO stated that the bulk of the studio’s workforce is being directed at the sequel to its sci-fi/fantasy hit, IGN reports.
"The majority of the team at Bungie is actually focused entirely on creating Destiny 2," he said.
Nothing else was revealed about “Destiny 2” during the call; not the name, not the plot, not anything. The only other detail confirmed during the call was the target release year of 2017, which is not exactly new information.
Then again, this isn’t likely to faze many fans of the series as most players are more interested in the upcoming final expansion of the first game; “Rise of Iron.” Gamerant suggests that most fans might be expecting “Bungie” to be directing most of their attention on the expansion to make sure that everything goes without a hitch, but now it’s been revealed that this is not the case.
The news was actually first covered by Jason Schreier, news editor over at Kotaku. Schreier was covering the quarterly call and Tweeted about the development.
Even though there are no concrete details with regards to what the sequel will be about, there is no shortage of rumors that are supposedly from credible sources. There’s the one about “Destiny 2” being a reboot and Luke Smith, “The Taken King” expansion director being given the helm. There’s also a rumor about the sequel’s title being “Beyond Destiny.”
Development for “Destiny 2” started 2 years ago, but “Bungie” was more preoccupied with updating the first game and working on the expansions to put a lot of resources to creating the sequel. By devoting the bulk of their time and manpower to finishing upcoming installment to the franchise now, fans can likely expect a timely release.
