Nvidia is reportedly in discussions to acquire artificial intelligence platform Hugging Face in a deal that could value the open-source AI company at nearly $13 billion, potentially extending the chipmaker’s aggressive expansion across the artificial intelligence industry.
Business Insider reported Thursday that Nvidia and Hugging Face have held acquisition talks in recent weeks, citing a person familiar with the discussions. The potential transaction could value Hugging Face at more than $13 billion.
Separately, The Information reported that Nvidia had agreed to purchase Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Nvidia has not publicly confirmed an agreement and did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A Hugging Face acquisition would add to Nvidia’s growing portfolio of AI investments and takeovers as the company seeks to strengthen its position beyond graphics processing units and other computing hardware.
Nvidia acquired foundation model startup Kumo in June and has also purchased ShedMD, Illumex and Groq over the past 12 months. The company has increasingly deployed its substantial financial resources across the broader AI ecosystem, including software, infrastructure and emerging artificial intelligence platforms.
Nvidia said Wednesday that it had committed approximately $18 billion toward equity investments for the remainder of the year, highlighting the scale of its AI investment strategy.
Reports of the potential Hugging Face deal emerged only hours after Nvidia released quarterly earnings that significantly exceeded Wall Street expectations. The semiconductor giant also issued a strong forecast for the current quarter, signaling that demand for AI computing infrastructure remains robust.
Hugging Face has developed into one of the most important platforms in the open-source artificial intelligence ecosystem. The company hosts a vast collection of machine learning models, datasets and development tools while providing community features widely used by AI researchers and developers.
Acquiring Hugging Face could give Nvidia a larger presence in AI software and open-source model development, complementing its dominant position in AI chips and computing infrastructure. A deal approaching $13 billion would also represent another major step in Nvidia’s strategy of investing heavily across the rapidly expanding global AI market.
