‘Doctor Strange’ finally released its official plot synopsis ahead of its scheduled release date for November 2016. Meanwhile, Mads Mikkelsen’s villainous role may have been revealed through an upcoming toy line’s packaging.
According to Comicbook.com, the upcoming film starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role finally released its official plot synopsis. It stated, “Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.”
The new film is set to introduce Cumberbatch into the MCU as the iconic Stephen Strange a.ka. Doctor Strange. It is intended as the 14th installment in the MCU – and the second in Phase Three - following ‘Captain America: Civil War’ but preceding ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’.
It is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Motion Pictures. The film is directed and co-written by Scott Derrickson. The filmmaker is best known for his previous work on horror, thriller, and science fiction films. His most notable films include ‘Hellraiser: Inferno’, ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’, ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’, and ‘Deliver Us From Evil’.
Derrickson’s new project with Marvel will seek to introduce metaphysical and magical dimensions to the shared superhero universe. It began principal photography on November 2015 and wrapped in April 2016. It took cast and crew around various exotic locations around the Kathmandu Valley before moving production to Longcross Studios in the United Kingdom. Filming also took place in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.
The film stars an ensemble cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Stuhlbarg, Tilda Swinton, and Mads Mikkelsen.
According to IGN, Mikkelsen may be playing a villain named Kaecilius. In the original Marvel comic books, he is a disciple of Ejiofor’s powerful Baron Mordo. Mikkelsen’s role, although still unconfirmed, was reportedly revealed on the packaging of Diamond Select Toys' Minimates. In a previous interview, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teased that Mikkelsen’s character would be "a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect."
‘Doctor Strange’ is an upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film scheduled to be released on November 4, 2016. It is based on the Marvel comic book superhero of the same name.
