During a recent rally, former President Donald Trump delivered a charged statement on Vice President Kamala Harris’s alleged lack of outreach to families who lost loved ones in the Afghanistan withdrawal, citing the powerful words of Christy Shamblin, the mother-in-law of fallen Marine Corps Sgt. Nicole Gee. Trump’s remarks come amid growing discourse about the U.S. exit from Afghanistan and the ongoing impacts on military families affected by the conflict.

Trump introduced Shamblin to the crowd, offering her platform to share her personal experience as a Gold Star family member. Shamblin highlighted a deep-seated frustration over what she described as the indifference from the current administration toward families like hers, who lost loved ones during the chaotic withdrawal. “Kamala never reached out to the families of the warriors,” Trump declared, echoing Shamblin’s words and adding a personal rebuke to Harris for what he suggested was a failure to engage with these families directly.

Trump emphasized the solemn reality for families of fallen service members, saying they are left to visit gravesites instead of celebrating holidays, family events, and joyful occasions. In a somber tone, Shamblin herself addressed the painful adjustments her family has had to make since losing Sgt. Gee. “Instead of planning family gatherings and holiday meals and Christmases and baby showers,” she said, “our family and thousands of other families plan outings at funeral grave sites.”

Sgt. Nicole Gee was one of the 13 U.S. service members who perished in the Kabul airport attack in August 2021 during the final phase of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Her passing, along with the others lost, has become a symbol of the human toll of military conflict and the often-unseen sacrifices made by service members and their families.

Trump’s words appeared aimed at highlighting what he perceives as a contrast between his own outreach to military families and the current administration’s approach. His statement and Shamblin’s remarks stirred applause from the crowd, as the former president emphasized his commitment to recognizing and supporting those who have served and sacrificed. Trump pointedly remarked on the administration’s alleged lack of personal contact with the grieving families, calling it a missed opportunity to provide comfort and respect to those dealing with loss.

For her part, Shamblin expressed gratitude for Trump’s acknowledgment, saying, “The recognition from a president who understands the weight of what we’re going through means a lot.” She added that her family and other families continue to face immense challenges in the aftermath of the withdrawal, emphasizing the need for a more engaged and compassionate approach from leadership.

Trump’s remarks have spurred reactions across the political spectrum, with some defending Harris and others calling for a deeper examination of the U.S. withdrawal process. The event underscored how the handling of military-related losses remains a critical topic for both political and social reflection. The former president concluded his segment by asserting that he would prioritize support for service members and their families, a promise that resonated with the crowd and appeared to underscore his message of solidarity with those who have served.
