EU leaders worry Trump in Malta summit

27 European Union leaders are meeting in the member country of Malta to discuss the future of the bloc, just days after the European Council President Donald Tusk branded Donald Trump as an existential threat to the European Union along with China, Russia, Terrorism, and a rise of populism in the European continent. Below are the key comments made so far,

  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel issued a call for unity. She said that the Europe has its fate in its own hands. She said, “The more we are clear about how we define our role in the world, the better we can also take care of our transatlantic relations.”
  • Austrian chancellor Christian Kern said, ““Today we have pretty mixed feelings, to be honest, because the tangible aspects of Mr. Trump’s policy raise some concerns.”
  • European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker suggested that the new administration in the United States doesn’t know the EU in detail and added that Mr. Trump needs to better explain his position on the EU.

The British Prime Minister Theresa May is due to speak to the 27 EU leaders of her impression of the new President of the United States, whom she met last Friday.
