Google plans to shift production of its Pixel smartphones, smartwatches and wireless earbuds entirely out of China beginning in 2027, according to a Nikkei Asia report. The technology giant is expected to rely on manufacturing facilities in Vietnam and India as it works to reduce supply-chain risks amid persistent U.S.-China tensions.
The Alphabet-owned company has reportedly informed suppliers that it wants all Pixel devices manufactured outside China starting next year. The decision follows progress in producing high-end Pixel smartphones in Vietnam during 2026, which has given Google greater confidence that it can accelerate its manufacturing transition.
If completed as planned, the move would make Google the second major global smartphone brand after Samsung Electronics to relocate its handset production away from China. The shift also reflects a broader trend among technology companies seeking to diversify manufacturing operations and limit their dependence on Chinese factories.
Despite rising component expenses, Google is targeting further growth for its Pixel smartphone business. The company reportedly plans to increase Pixel shipments by approximately 8% to 10% in 2026 compared with the roughly 12 million units shipped last year. That would put annual shipments at around 13 million units if the company reaches the upper end of its target.
Higher memory-chip costs remain a challenge for smartphone manufacturers, but Google is reportedly using the scale of its wider business to improve its purchasing leverage. The company is combining memory-chip orders for its Google Cloud operations with those required for Pixel smartphones.
This strategy could strengthen Google's negotiating position with major memory suppliers, including Micron Technology, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
Moving Google Pixel production to Vietnam and India would mark another significant change in the global technology supply chain. It could also reinforce both countries' growing roles as electronics manufacturing hubs as major technology companies continue diversifying production beyond China.
