Different casualty accounts from Ukraine’s overnight attacks left the national toll unsettled, with Euronews reporting nine or more dead while a Ukrainian presidential update and The Associated Press gave lower counts.
Euronews’ Oct. 22 video update reported nine or more deaths across Ukraine during the preceding 24 hours, citing Ukrainian authorities. It described overnight missile and drone attacks in Kyiv and the Kharkiv region.
In an official Telegram post, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian attacks had hit 12 regions overnight, with two people dead and 34 wounded, including five children. He said 21 ballistic missiles were fired at Kyiv in three waves. The Associated Press reported at least four dead, including two women killed in a market strike in Lozova and one person each in Kharkiv and Kyiv. It said dozens were wounded in the market attack.
UATV cited the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS) for one death and 22 injuries in Kyiv, including four children. It also relayed Mayor Vitali Klitschko’s earlier count of 15 injured, including two 15-year-olds; eight were hospitalized. In Lymanivka, Kharkiv region, regional administration head Oleh Syniehubov reported a 42-year-old woman killed and four people injured, including boys ages 10 and 13. The reports did not give a shared cutoff for comparing national totals.
The accounts came a day after a Russian drone strike on a Kyiv apartment tower killed at least two people, EconoTimes reported.
The Associated Press attributed to Zelenskyy a figure of 170 Russian strikes on critical energy facilities since Oct. 11. It also said the power grid had become a more frequent target, with damage threatening essential services during winter. The outlet reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed in principle to resume talks with Ukraine and the United States; discussions were expected after Nov. 10, with no date set.
