One person died and six were wounded in a Friday shooting at a Halloween store in Fairfield, California, where police said early information pointed to a targeted incident.
The shooting happened inside a Spirit Halloween store at Solano Town Center. Fairfield police said seven people had gunshot wounds: one died, and the other six went to local hospitals. At least three wounded people were in critical condition in the department’s first account. Police had not identified the victims or described a motive.
Police said officers responded at about 11:30 p.m. ET Friday (03:30 UTC Saturday). The San Francisco Chronicle, citing dispatch calls, placed the shooting at about 11:54 p.m. ET (03:54 UTC Saturday). The reports do not explain the difference between the police-reported response time and the Chronicle’s reported shooting time.
Police later characterized the case as targeted, with one suspect, while stressing that the assessment was based on preliminary information. Detectives were examining footage and other evidence to determine who was responsible. The FBI’s Sacramento office said it was sending its Evidence Response Team to assist police and urged the public to avoid the area.
The Associated Press reported that the mall canceled its Mall-O-Ween event scheduled for Oct. 31, though Solano Town Center’s events page still listed it.
