‘Fargo’ Season 3 Trailer Reveals Ewan McGregor’s Second Role as Ray Stussy’s Brother Emmit; Showrunner Teases Brotherly Rivalry as Fuel for New Story

‘Fargo’ season 3 recently unveiled its latest trailer showing Ewan McGregor’s second role as Ray Stussy’s wealthier brother Emmit. Showrunner Noah Hawley teased that Emmit and Ray’s sibling rivalry will serve as a catalyst for the events of the upcoming season.

The latest trailer for the third season of the black-comedy and drama anthology television series based on the 1996 film of the same name introduced Ewan McGregor’s second role as Emmit Stussy, Ray’s rich and handsome brother and proclaimed “Parking Lot King of Minnesota.” Emmit looks considerably different from Ray, who was introduced in the previously released trailer.

McGregor is set to take on dual roles in the upcoming season. His first character Ray is a balding parole officer with a pot belly. In the first trailer, Ray is seen at a diner and was accompanied by his girlfriend, Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Nikki Swango.

In contrast, the new trailer posted on the Independent opens to McGregor’s Emmit looking sharp in a tie and suit while in his office as he licks as stamp and carefully places this on an envelope. The wealthy businessman seems calculating in his manner as he looks through a magnifying glass to make sure that the stamp is in the right place. He then smiles at the camera as if he is up to no good.

According to Express, showrunner Noah Hawley teased that Emmit and Ray’s rivalry will be the fuel that runs the third season. Hawley teased, "There is an old wound between them that sort of gets reopened and re-litigated, and that rivalry becomes contentious and that sort of puts all the events in motion.”

He continued, "The fun soup of it is you have to have enough moving parts that everything is on a collision course, but which parts are going to collide? There’s this element of randomness to it, which I think adds to the truthiness of our fake true story. So, it starts with Ewan and Ewan as brothers. It’s not as big character-wise a story as the second year, but I’m really excited about it."

The synopsis for season 3 reveals that Emmit sees himself as a success story while Ray blames Emmit for the series of bad luck that has managed to creep into his life, making him live in the shadow of his wealthy brother. Their sibling rivalry begins with theft but soon escalates into murder.

‘Fargo’ season 3 is expected to premiere on FX on April 19, 2017. It will be set in the year 2010. The new season also stars Carrie Coon, David Thewlis, Michael Stuhlbarg, Fred Melamed, Jim Gaffigan, Scoot McNairy, Karan Soni, and Thomas Mann.
