Fans of the “Fast and Furious” franchise are sure to be up to their neck in excitement with all the planned projects for Universal Studios' biggest franchise. The “Fast and Furious” series has already grossed over $5 billion as of 2015 and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. Aside from “Fast and Furious 9,” the franchise has as much material to throw at its fans for the next two years much like how Marvel and Disney pump out their superhero and “Star Wars” films.
Netflix has already announced that DreamWorks Animations is already working on a “Fast and Furious” animated series to be broadcasted on the streaming giant. Chris Morgan, a writer for the film series, is also giving fans the “Fast and Furious” spin-off, “Hobbs & Shaw,” in 2019. The spin-off will feature the characters Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, played by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, respectively.
Unfortunately for fans, the series' own popularity may be its own enemy as “Fast and Furious 9” has been delayed to 2020 due to the Fast and Furious spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw.” The delay has sparked controversy even amongst the series' cast, with Tyrese Gibson infamously lashing out at Johnson on social media over the pushback for the main film. As of the present, Gibson and Johnson may have buried the hatchet to an extent, as Tyrese clarifies in a podcast interview.
But just like the franchise itself, “Fast and Furious 9” is hardly fazed by the 2020 delay. The series's upcoming mainline sequel is currently embroiled in rumors that Han, played by Sung Kang, a former member of Dominic Toretto's crew, may become significant to the franchise's future. Vin Diesel and Chris Morgan have been non-committal about how Sung Kang's Han will be important to the future of the franchise beyond confirming that Statham's Shaw will be reliving his killing of the much-beloved character.
While there has been no confirmed casting for the “Fast and Furious 9” movie in 2020, expect most of the regular cast to return when the adrenaline pumping franchise comes back to the delight of fans.
