Few citizen agree with further integration EU integration

After Donald Trump hailed Brexit and slammed the European Union by calling it a vehicle for Germany, the European Council President has called on the leaders of the member countries to take spectacular steps to remain integrated beyond doubts, which probably means further integration. But lot many citizens in the European Union disagree with further integration. A majority of the people in some of the countries are looking for disintegration rather than further assimilation.

According to survey by Pew Research center,

  • 68 percent of the people surveyed in austerity-hit Greece feel that some powers should be returned to national governments and only 8 percent support a further integration.
  • 39 percent in Italy and France, 35 percent in France and 44 percent of the people surveyed in Netherlands oppose further EU integration and want powers to be returned to national governments.

More importantly,

  • 43 percent of the People surveyed even in Germany oppose further integration while only 26 percent remain in favor.

While the European Union project has been successful for many, it has left scars of tough times and austerity on the lives of many. For example, euro benefited the German economy a lot, while the Greeks remain trapped by it as the single currency has slowed the recovery in that country and forced severe austerity.
